Lunch Poems

Southern promoted Social Justice during the month of November. Departments held many events and activities to support this theme. The English Department participated by hosting Jennifer Sarja, the New Haven high school teacher/activist, for a talk. There was also a bulletin board that advertised books with themes of social justice. Lastly, the teachers held an event for the students called Lunch Poems.

This event included a huge home cooked lunch by the professors. The lunch included two kinds of Jambalaya, one vegan and one with meat. There was also cooked carrots, brussel sprouts, rice, bread, and or course desserts! Professors and students participated in an open mic, where they read their favorite poems about food, hunger, body image, and other related topics.

The event was so nice because it brought students and faculty together to celebrate the end of the semester and social justice month. The professors mentioned how students do not always get enough nutrition. They can have long hours of study and work and eat unhealthy quick/fast food. Sometimes, students in college do not always have the funds to eat healthy, so it was extremely kind of the professors to put together this event. Professors and students enjoyed the event and hope to schedule something similar in the spring.
