Alumni of the Month: November

Chelsea Nevin, Program Specialist at The National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault.

I think the most important thing I learned from being an English major at SCSU was to take risks. Being someone who didn’t know what to do after college, I understand the constant anxiety of wanting to do something outside of journalism or teaching. Because I switched majors in the middle of my junior year, I wanted my time at Southern to be memorable. So I forced myself to push aside my anxiety and fearlessly try new things. In a matter of a year and a half I had studied abroad in Italy, I joined the Symphonic Dance Company and was the secretary of Sigma Tau Delta. Every club or class I took led me closer to where I am today. Through my MFA at WestConn, I completed an internship outside of the English realm. Because Southern gave me the foundation to think critically and write with purpose, my internship offered me a fulltime position. So if you ever have a little voice telling you can’t do something, ignore it and take that risk.
